Rocas is the story of the people who made it, and the land that made them.
It started with a feeling.
In 2010, Brenda drove up a dusty road with a friend who was considering buying a piece of land. Her friend decided against it. Brenda bought it on the spot with no plan. All she had was a strong intuition she couldn't explain.
She left it mostly untouched for years while she traveled the world, seeking wisdom from spiritual leaders across four continents.
The land waited.
When she came back, it needed her.
She cleared, cleaned, and restored. Indian chiefs came to bless the ground. Children planted seeds. She painted and hammered and rebuilt.
The land underwent a metamorphosis.
The land and Brenda healed each other.
One afternoon, mid-renovation, she looked up and saw the ancient stone formations that had always been there, waiting to be noticed. Las rocas. The rocks. And just like that, she knew what this place was called, and what it was for.
By the time Nikki joined—brought in through a serendipitous connection, her business mind meeting Brenda's creative soul—Rocas was alive with something unique. They protected it, shaped it, and opened the gate.
Since 2021, Rocas has hosted over 70 retreats. Facilitators from across the country have brought their most important work here, transforming the lives of hundreds of guests.
OUR PHILOSOPHY
Healing is not linear, and it doesn't look the same for everyone. Rocas welcomes every modality, every tradition, and every person ready to do the work.
MEET THE TEAM
BRENDA MARKSTEIN
Owner & Co-Founder
Brenda is a designer, Emmy award-winning television and film producer, world traveler, grandmother, somatic breathwork practioner, and the creative soul at the heart of Rocas.
She has climbed Kilimanjaro, trekked rainforests, sat with the Aboriginal people of Australia, and sought wisdom from spiritual leaders across four continents. She has also raised three children, survived profound loss, and learned over decades — what it means to truly come home to herself.
Rocas is the expression of everything she has lived. She didn't build it as a business. She built it as an offering—a place where others could find what she spent a lifetime searching for.
"This land is my passion, my love, my joy."
Nikki Michelini
Co-Founder
Nikki was born in a log cabin beside a lake, raised on a fruit farm in Florida, and relocated to Barbados as a child.
At 14 she moved to Los Angeles alone to pursue dance. She went on to become a nationally recognized wealth management executive, a CPA, a certified yoga instructor, and a Level II Reiki practitioner.
Her high-pressure career eventually led her to spirituality—studying with teachers like Dr. Joe Dispenza and Marianne Williamson, recognizing that the most important work she could do was on herself.
When a serendipitous connection brought her to Brenda, something clicked. Rocas mirrors the world she grew up in, with deep respect for nature. It didn't feel like a new beginning; it felt like a return home.
She brings to Rocas what she brings to everything: rigor, warmth, and an unshakeable belief in what becomes possible when people feel truly supported.
"Rocas invites us to come home to ourselves. I am honored to play a part in offering that."
Maggie Nielsen
Director of Operations & Reiki Practitioner
Maggie first came to Rocas as a guest. The moment she stepped on the land, she felt a sense of belonging so immediate it surprised her.
Even as a visitor, she found herself moving chairs, clearing plates, bringing blankets to people gathered around the fire. It didn't feel like helping. It felt like home.
She kept coming back. Eventually she never left.
Maggie brought with her the lived wisdom of her own healing. Her journey through somatic healing, inner-child work, sitting in sacred ceremony in Mexico, and a deepening practice of Reiki cracked her open to a way of experiencing herself and the world she hadn't known was available.
She arrived at Rocas already knowing, in her body, what transformation requires. A jeweler, painter, and former K-12 teacher, she has always been someone who creates and nurtures in equal measure.
Today she weaves the practical and the sacred into everything she oversees—holding the operations of Rocas with the same care and intentionality she brings to her Reiki practice.
"I believe Rocas is part of a larger remembering. We are meant to heal together."
Nate Nadeau
Creative Director & Strategy Officer
Nate enlisted in the Air Force at 23 and trained as a respiratory therapist.
He deployed on FEMA missions, worked through the COVID-19 pandemic at the largest hospital in Los Angeles, and spent years in the ICU at the VA hospital in Denver. He held hands, witnessed death, and remained present for people in their most vulnerable moments. He learned what it means to hold space before he had language for it.
Alongside his clinical work, he searched inward, finding communities of men asking the same questions he was: how to feel worthy, how to connect authentically, how to move through fear without being defined by it. He spent years helping others find their footing, and it pointed toward everything that came next.
When active duty ended in 2022, Nate began photographing retreats. Over the next few years he worked with communities across Sedona, Salt Lake City, Austin, and San Diego.
When a friend invited him to support a retreat at Rocas, what began as a photography role became an expression of core purpose. Nate leads with heart, authenticity, and truth. He shows up as a beacon for those ready to look at what has been living in the shadows.
This is his medicine. This is where he belongs.
"The most important work begins with the questions you've been afraid to ask yourself."
Kathy Flores
Land Steward
Kathy was raised on a farm in Arizona, caring for horses, cows, chickens, and everything else that needed tending.
Those instincts never left her. The pristine condition of the Rocas property — the grounds, the gardens, the animals — is largely the result of her unstoppable dedication to this land.
She is also a black belt in jujitsu, a former security supervisor at Angel Stadium, a self-defense instructor, a three-decade veteran of the celebrity impersonation circuit, and — according to everyone who has met her — the fastest person on the property to make a stranger feel like family.
Kathy is 5'2" and contains multitudes.
She tends to the land with reverence and tends to the people on it with joy. If you're lucky, she'll take you on a morning walk with the goats.
"My greatest joy is making others happy. This place gives me that every single day."
“I took a deep breath and landed in my body the moment I arrived.”
"There's something about this land that just lets everything disappear. It feels like home. You feel welcomed, honored, not judged."
"As soon as I stepped out of the car, I felt peace, calm, and belonging. I just knew I needed to be here."
The land is ready. So is the team. Are you?
Whether you're here to host or here to heal, there's a place for you at Rocas.
